Description

Nov. 16th edit: I added some extra details to the background, moved the cat up, and changed the other butterfly things so they wouldn't be as distracting. Enjoy.

This is the first place prize for TrollGirl, who won Anthro-Fantasy-club's icon contest about a year ago (haha, oops ^^;). Her entry is the group's current icon, if you'd like to see it: :iconanthro-fantasy-club:.

Man, this one was a toughie. I don't have a lot of experience with forests, so I had to do a bunch of studies and look at a bunch of photos to get the background to this point. I still don't consider forests to be a strong point of mine -- I honestly prefer to paint inorganic scenes, winterscapes, and skyscapes over forests -- but I like to think that I've at least improved with this picture. It certainly has a lot more depth than the autumn picture I made about two years ago: aboveclouds.deviantart.com/art…

Special thanks to Shadow-Wolf for critiquing my cat anatomy when I was working on the sketch, and to LarryWilson for helping me with the values, colors, and -- most importantly -- the composition. Larry kicked me into doing something a lot more complex and involved than my original idea, and the picture thanks him for it.

The Great Cat belongs to TrollGirl

I used textures from uj-stock [ uj-stock.deviantart.com/art/Ro… ], JWJjjoj [ jwjjjoj.deviantart.com/art/JJa… ], and KYghost [ kyghost.deviantart.com/art/Aut… ] in this picture. The last one was used as a texture to give the leaf-covered ground a bit of bite... which saved me from painting about 50 billion dots. >___>

Phew that fur looks so soft and plush! It really transitions well into the feathers of the wings! Nice job at capturing the way the light shines through the feathers (I always have a hard time making that happen haha) and there are so many beautiful details in the bg!! Amazing pic Pash!
